Top marks for Ottery's hospital

Wednesday, 08 August 2012

OTTERY St Mary Hospital passed a Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) inspection with flying colours and registered top marks throughout.

It was the third year on the trot that the hospital notched up maximum grades.

The areas inspected were food, environment and privacy.

Community hospitals in Devon were inspected in January and February this year by inspectors who use a five-grade scale, with: 1 Unacceptable, 2 Poor, 3 Acceptable, 4 Good and 5 Excellent.

Matron Mickie Dicks said: “I am very proud of the housekeeping and catering teams at both Ottery St Mary and Honiton hospitals, who year after year achieve such high standards.
“The cleanliness of both sites is frequently praised by both patients and their relatives, as is the quality of the food.

“It is hard to achieve such high standards and even harder to consistently maintain them.”
The hospital is managed by Northern Devon Healthcare NHS Trust.

Kate Lyons, director of operations for the trust, said: “We are pleased that the majority of our hospitals in East Devon have been rated as excellent all round, and that each one achieved a minimum score of good.

“The issues of cleanliness, food and privacy are very important and we do all we can to provide our patients with a high-quality service and experience.

“On the whole our hospitals have performed strongly and, by addressing areas in need of improvement, we are confident of maintaining and building on these high standards in the future.”

The PEAT report concluded: “The inspection teams were encouraged by all the work and standards being achieved throughout the trust.”

Inspection panels include NHS staff such as matrons and facilities and infection control teams, as well as patient representatives and an independent assessor.
