£1K raised at duck race for Devon Freewheelers
Wednesday, 08 August 2012
A DUCK race organised by Honiton and District Lions Club raised £1,000 for Devon Freewheelers, a Honiton-based voluntary emergency service transporting blood and other medical supplies for the NHS.
Bad weather forced the organisers to cancel associated events and stands, but the annual race was held as planned near Otter Inn, Weston on Sunday, August 5th.
Bob Francis of Honiton and District Lions said: “Given the weather, there was still an excellent turnout with ticket sales being brisk, adding to the numbers already sold in advance.
“Once the tickets were sold, two Lions took to the water carrying the ducks 100 meter upstream, releasing them into the River Otter for their dash to the winning post.
“Daniel Lavery, who set up Devon Freewheelers, was there to unveil the new BMW response bike. With blue lights flashing it was a big attraction for children and adults.
“At the end of the day we were very pleased to announce that the target of £1,000 had been reached. Daniel took to the microphone thanking everyone for supporting the Honiton Lions and Devon Freewheelers.”
